Archives For love

1 in 100,000,000

Our first date was at Eau Claire Market in Calgary. We wandered by the Bow River, easily slipped into comfortable conversation, and then later sat on the grass and talked some more. A middle-aged woman randomly walked by us, spotted a four-leaf clover nearby, picked it and gave it to Abby with a smile. She took a couple more steps, spotted another four-leaf clover in the grass, picked it and casually handed it to me. And then simply walked off, leaving us awestruck.

They say there’s a 1 in 10,000 chance of finding a four-leaf clover. It’s 1 in 100,000,000 to find two, and probably 1 in a bazillion to find two on a perfect first date. As superstition goes, “A person who finds one will meet a future lover on the same day.” Lucky me, I did.

While packing for my recent move, I came across an old letter – undated and written well before being shared with me a year ago – from my dear mom. It’s lovely and philosophical and wise…

In life there is a transference of an energy that transcends the physical and takes residence in the deeper and higher facet’s of one’s being. The greatest of all is the power and energy that love possesses. It will extend to all who enter into your life and to the others who become part of your life’s circle. It is important to nurture and support this fragile relationship and respect it’s existence – with dignity and trust. And in doing so you will maintain the energy of love within your being on all levels.

When there are challenges, find comfort in the existence that the source is greater than the individual(s). Accept ownership and responsibility for what you have created (positive or negative), extend the benefit of doubt, and don’t be so arrogant or prideful that you are unable to say you are sorry. Communication is forever important – to dispel any misunderstandings, to enhance your world, and to eliminate the non-productive energies such as worry.

And remember, love is like standing naked in a lightning storm – prepare to duck once in a while.

I love you, mum. Happy Mother’s Day!

Love is like a friendship caught on fire: In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

My 13 Year Summer

13 years ago today I moved from Calgary to Montreal, and one month ago yesterday I returned. I figured I’d take this moment to reflect on this huge chapter of my life and offer some tips to the many other hopeless romantics drawn to la belle ville. 13 years, wow. It was quite a ride.

As the story goes, it started with a couple trips to Montreal for concerts – first in 1998 and then again in 2001 – as well as a summer roadtrip in 1999 from Toronto where I was interning at the time. Montreal is a charming city by default but it is an extra special place in the summer – and I fell in love with it. The diversity, multiple languages, ever-present festivals, delicious food, gorgeous girls, great music scene, stunning architecture, magnificent street art, history, vibrant street life, and, yes, a certain joie de vivre. It all captivated me and at some point during one of those trips I promised myself that I would spend one full summer of my life there.

I’ve been thinking a lot about friendship lately. It’s a well-worn topic and yet there are still some aspects of it that perhaps don’t get discussed much – especially in the context of how friendships evolve over time.

Ode to a Tree

August 29, 2014 — Leave a comment

I have a fondness for trees. They’re beautiful, stoic, generous. They provide scenery, nests, shade, rustling, colour, and metaphors.

Fall 2013

Fall 2013

Everyday this week my (urban) neighbourhood has been abuzz with the sounds of chainsaws and a woodchipper. One block over they’ve been systematically dismantling a giant tree that towered over the area. It was a truly huge tree – at least 12 storeys – and it looked healthy and full, with a lush green canopy broadly covering numerous buildings, yards, and other trees. Perhaps it was a risk for a limb to crash down during strong winds or a heavy snowstorm, perhaps it had become diseased and was rotting from within, or perhaps some low-scruples entrepreneur simply oversold his cutting services. At first I thought they were just doing some pre-winter trimming but by the end of the week the whole thing was gone.

It’s sad. There stood this huge, strong, calm, vibrant, enduring presence and now there’s nothing but sky. Someone looking there now wouldn’t even know that something so mighty and beautiful once stood there for so long, giving life to so much else.

Nature Boy

There are so many covers of this great song (written by Eden Ahbez in 1947) but this one by Nat King Cole is surely the best. My favourite.
